[Public-List] Clever, but perhaps not so clever...

My thought would be to decide if you want to see through the dodger or 
above the dodger?  When we were sailing I looked through the dodger and 
George looked over the dodger.  The boom did not rest on top of the 
dodger at any time and I guess the gooseneck was raised enough to keep 
the boom clear at all times.
