Gordon,

The A30 chain plates (all of them) are held by friction rather than by the shear strength of the bolts. Your old bolts are bent because they became loose and the friction was lost. In addition to fixing the "mush", it is very important to use fender washers under the nut of each bolt. This will spread the load enabling you to properly tighten the nut. One should also use lock washers or nuts with plastic inserts.

I had pretty much the exact same experience with Candy Cane 2 years ago, except I fashioned my replacement spacer from a scrap of teak I had kicking around, rather than a scrap of mahogany.

In the very same season, Eventide (my friend Victor's A30) lost her rig due to a similar chainplate failure interacting poorly with a gust while underway. However since Eventide had already recently had a large crack in the front of the keel capsule repaired (the crack had formed in the
2017-18 winter), Victor and his co-owner decided that Eventide had already been too much trouble, and scrapped her.
