[Public-List] impeller

Moyer’s improved water pump has knurled screws which can be spun in and out without tools. That’s a vast improvement and I’m glad I installed one in my engine.

I still lay on the engine when changing the impeller (sometimes remembering to lay a cushion on the engine so I don’t end up with four chest bruises from the spark plugs) and the job is easy and quick.

The water pump is basically diagonally down and forward of the forward bottom edge of the cockpit well, so a hole in the sole would be too far aft and oriented the wrong way, while a hole in the forward side of the well would be too high. The recommendation for a hole in the plywood panel making up the inboard side of the (starboard) cockpit locker seems the most reasonable to me (assuming the fuel tank isn't in there). Alternately, there are some people on the list who have replaced the original deck plate in the cockpit sole with a considerably larger hatch, which might allow enough of you to get far enough in (upside-down, of course) to meaningfully improve access to the pump.
