Putting an inspection plate into the cockpit sole for this purpose is not necessary. Just buy the impeller puller and thumb screw cover plate from Moyer Marine. It makes changing the impeller a simple job.

I am interested in putting a deck plate in the cockpit above where the impeller is located so I can easily access and remove the impeller from the atomic 4 engine. Where should this deck plate be located? I can not think that I am the first person to think of doing this.

Not familiar with the location of the water pump and impeller on an Atomic
4 as Constance has a Yanmar.
Would suggest considering cutting an access panel in one of the two cockpit lockers.
Cut an access panel on Constance, in the port locker, in the winter of
2021-2022 so that I could more easily
adjust the stuffing box...I had replaced the stuffing that winter.  Works
well.   Could be that an access panel
of that type would allow you improved access to the water pump and impeller
as well.   I made the cuts in the
plywood, that forms the inboard wall of the cockpit locker, about 1-1/2"
from the hull, the underside of the deck, and the forward end of the locker.

Can send photos, if you need.

I do have a deck plate on my cockpit sole.  I did not install it; it must have been installed by a PO.  It is fairly robust, made of bronze and when the plate is unscrewed it does allow better access to the shaft, stuffing box, etc.  I have a yanmar 2gm so impeller access is not an issue.

It is located about a foot aft of the bridge deck and centered.  I did manage to find one photo of the cockpit sole and will forward it to you.

I am not a fan of drilling holes in boats and certainly understand folks?
reluctance and hesitation. Whoever put it in must have done a pretty good job as I have not noticed any cockpit sole weakness nor water intrusion.

I used to have an atomic 4 on Candy Cane before repowering to electric, and what I remember of the water pump location isn't somewhere that access would be meaningfully improved to by a new hole in the cockpit. The water pump is basically diagonally down and forward of the forward bottom edge of the cockpit well, so a hole in the sole would be too far aft and oriented the wrong way, while a hole in the forward side of the well would be too high. The recommendation for a hole in the plywood panel making up the inboard side of the (starboard) cockpit locker seems the most reasonable to me (assuming the fuel tank isn't in there). Alternately, there are some people on the list who have replaced the original deck plate in the cockpit sole with a considerably larger hatch, which might allow enough of you to get far enough in (upside-down, of course) to meaningfully improve access to the pump.

Really though, the best thing I can think of for improving the ease of impeller removal is to make sure that the screws holding the plate onto the back of the pump are hex-head screws that you can use a socket and ratchet to remove/reinstall, rather than having to reach farther over the engine to keep a screwdriver properly seated.
