[Public-List] A30 stuffing box hose

Most likely you would be replacing the bronze shaft with Stainless
Steel. Bronze shafting has become hard to find. I have not completely
removed the stuffing box/cutless bearing assembly, but on Checkmate it
wiggled around enough when removing the cutless bearing, it sure looked
like the whole assembly was set in place with the grey monkey poop. the
only mechanical attachment being the 2 lag bolts holding the cutless
assembly to the deadwood. Not water tight on it's own, for sure.

When I worked on my stern tube a few years back, I realized that the caulk that Whitby put around it was to keep it from turning when you unscrew the cutless bearing housing, not to keep water out. The cutless bearing housing keeps the water out of the boat except through the stern tube, and the stuffing box stops the water that's in the stern tube (except for a few drops while motoring).
