Just FYI, my A30 back flooded once, through the transom into the bilge. Filled up the main cabin and 8” above the floor boards while we weren’t looking - due to siphon action. Hahah. A few moments of panic that day. put in an anti siphon exhaust loop and one way flapper valve afterwards to “mitigate” the issue…

I checked the rudder gland, adjusted the prop stuffing box, examined the underside of the keel for the classic leak A30’s can develop down there… and checked all the through hulls and engine cooling.

My my what a surprise to discover that the hole the installer had drilled for the through hull was a full 1/4” too large in diameter. I found the caulking compound he’d applied to the throat of the fitting where the flange started completely intact as a round sectioned bead… it had cured without touching the edges of the hole. All that was keeping the water out for a decade was the pressure of the uncaulked outer flange against the hull. It leaked, and due to insecure tightening, had come loose completely when I changed the sending units.

And I test the sending unit BEFORE launch now as part of standing orders. I harboured uncharitable thoughts about the installer… yes I should have done it myself but at the time I wanted to do him a favour by giving him work.

In the 10 years I’ve owned the boat I’ve had no issues but now I need to pump it daily. Any thoughts?John IrvingJirvingvt at gmail.com
