[Public-List] rudder stuffing box

On Friendship 295, I have a second 6 inch diameter access plate in the cockpit floor that provides easy access to both stuffing boxes. If you want a bronze one that matches the original, then one can likely find that at Bacons in Annapolis.

Does anyone have suggestion on how to tighten the rudder stuffing box on a 1979 A30 liner boat? On wooden boats we didn?t want to haul we?d dive down with handfuls of sawdust for leaks that would get sucked in and swell up and stop the leak. I?m not sure about a stuffing box though.

Can anybody tell me the best way to tighten the stuffing box for the rudder on a 1979 A30? It seems to me you need to be a contortionist, a midget or have 4? long arms!

Sorry. After doing poorly executed hot boat yoga and saying words that earned me soap, I finally resorted to cutting a working port in the cockpit floor. Yes water can invade the bilge in green seas but it is highly unlikely. I can now adjust the reversing gear while actually seeing into the box and adjust the stuffing box any damn time I want. Many would say that floor integrity is compromised. Not sure. Good luck

I had the same issue and ended up cutting an appropriately 18x 21? opening, reframed the cockpit floor accordingly and installed a hatch that gives me access to the stuffing box and also the rear of my Westerbeke diesel. No regrets- Sent from my iPad

Good job! I did the same thing, except needed to replace the entire floor due to some water logged soft spots. The hatch gave me complete access to the back of the engine and hull right back to the lazerrete. My 60 yo iron and rubber hose exhaust system was rotted and ready to fail, shift cables need replacing the next season, and rudder stuffing box needed new packing. Easy peasy working thru the hatch.

Also relocated the battery bank under the floor, so moved it out of the bilge and onto a new shelf above waterline. Very nice to know I wouldn?t short out my electrical system with high water in the bilge. Best upgrade I ever did on the boat.

I found that the Beta 16 was a very close match to the Atomic 4 in terms of prop RPM and delivered power at the max practical horse power. This is borne out by my experience with the Beta 16 and my original 13x7 2- blade
