[Public-List] Questions about wintering an atomic 4 engine

A lot of A4s are run without thermostats. That makes the answer to your 
question highly variable. I long ago have taken to sticking my hand in 
the overboard discharge stream. If it is warm, the thermo has opened and 
you are good to go.
It's if it never gets warm is what gives you something new to worry 
about-like no thermostat, for example.
