I got the idea from Mike Lehman. I don't have pictures of the compressor installed but I recorded the process of refurbing the icebox and installing the cooling plate. This can be slid out into the head/hanging locker area when needed. I find this to be a perfect arrangement and is very energy efficient with my 200W solar panel system. It was plug and play with the installation of a 12v outlet in that area (used 12g. wire for that 15' run). Compare that with the $1000 or so needed for the components to convert the built-in icebox and it seemed like a no-brainer to me. If something goes wrong with it, throw it away and get another, compared to the costly repair of a conversion setup. The ice box (my boat is #449 liner model) can be used for storage. I did line my ice box with extra styrofoam on the interior and will keep it for iced drinks on day excursions and then for food storage for longer cruises. The compressor is located in the port sail locker all the way aft. I removed the counter and insulated the ice box and covered the insulation with the white rippled plastic (like you would find in some bathrooms) and glassed the seams. The frig has worked great for 9 years now. It will get to freezing and there is more room in the ice box because we no longer need large blocks of ice. We can run the frig for 4 days on a single battery and still start the engine with that same battery. It is a great addition to the boat. I took lots of pictues of the install and can share them with you if you want.
