I bought a Vevor portable 53qt. refrigerator on Ebay for $220 (free
shipping) and placed it in the v-berth on the floor under the bunk ... a
perfect fit. This can be slid out into the head/hanging locker area when
needed. I find this to be a perfect arrangement and is very energy
efficient with my 200W solar panel system. It was plug and play with the
installation of a 12v outlet in that area (used 12g. wire for that 15'
run). Compare that with the $1000 or so needed for the components to
convert the built-in icebox and it seemed like a no-brainer to me. If
something goes wrong with it, throw it away and get another, compared to
the costly repair of a conversion setup. The ice box (my boat is #449
liner model) can be used for storage. I did line my ice box with extra
styrofoam on the interior and will keep it for iced drinks on day
excursions and then for food storage for longer cruises.
