I just received a letter from the National Vessel Documentation center 
that says, "Effective immediately, CG-1280 VESSEL RENEWAL NOTIFICATION, 
APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL courtesy notices will no longer be mailed to 
single-vessel owners.

That means that owners are now responsible for remembering to renew on 
the NVDC website, www.uscg.mil/nvdc

The notification says that customers "are encouraged to do so at the 
next available opportunity," but I know from painful experience that if 
you renew early, the renewal starts at the month of renewal rather than 
extending the period of the previous renewal. I've learned to only renew 
in the month of expiration.
