area? Your right on target, as to location. Your memory is of Barren Island
which is the correct name of the area (it's a peninsula now). My marina used to
be known as Barren Island Marina and is currently called Gateway Marina. It's
been about 70+ years since the area was as you described. Around 1930 NYC built
it's first municipal airport on Barren Island called Floyd Bennet Field, which
remained semi-active through the Vietnam War. It went through several changes
and the only aircraft there now are NYC Police helicopters. All of Barren Island
and Large chunks of Jamaica Bay, Staten Island, and Sandy Hook now comprise
Gateway National Seashore. The whole area is much cleaner now than ever before
and YES it is scenic. No, there are no remnants of horses in the area. I
use Deadhorse Bay as my hailing port as a conversation starter (almost no one
knows where it is). It is a marvelous sailing area with consistent winds (even
in the dead of summer). I can put my sails up as soon as I clear the docks and
sail right out into New York Bight. The water is plenty deep (at least for 4' 3"
draft) and compared to Long Island Sound (and the Chesapeake) the winds are
marvelous. If your ever up this way, stop in. If your curious at all, my local
