Cockpit Sole Hatches

I recall mention, in these exchanges, of a cast aluminum hatch for sale at, if
I remember correctly, Hamilton Marine somewhere in the NE (Maine?). Are these
the Bowmar hatches or another company altogether?
Regards,
Paul

TYPE="CITE">Dear Albergers,

Back once again on the
subject of cockpit sole hatches, I finally
reached a knowledgeable
fellow, Bob Tutin (sp?) who is a sales rep for
Bowmar/Pompanette
(www.pompanette.com )in FL. (813-885-2182). He¹s a
sailor,
too!

Here are notes from talking to him on 3
different kinds of hatches:

1. He says
Bowmar¹s cast aluminum inspection hatches are the very best
for this
purpose, that of giving engine access from the cockpit sole. Model
C41020, for example, costs approx. $360 and is the sturdiest,
appropriate
for offshore, stands up to total flooding, etc.
(For those of us in the PNW, there is an outfit in
Bellingham which
makes these aluminum hatches too, primarily for
commercial fishing boats.
Baier, or something like that, is the company
name.)

2. However, of the plastic Bowmar
hatches (which are ³weatherproof,²
but not "waterproof") the strongest
are the relatively older model
INSPECTION HATCHES with model numbers G8.
G8 1020 (about 10 x 20 in) is
one model of this series and
is made of polycarbonate‹ which is the
best/strongest of the plastiques
for cockpit sole use. They will, sez Bob,
keep out rainwater, but
not necessarily standing water. He recommended
placing a G8 a bit
aft so possible drips don¹t land on the engine.

3.
Bob recommended *not* to use the newer Bowmar ACCESS hatches (G7
model numbers) which are made of the softer polypropylene plastic.

Bob clearly stated that he did not recommend use
of the plastic hatches
for this purpose at all, instead of aluminum, but
if a person decided to,
the polycarb plastic would be strongest.
(Yes, Ferd, this is a disclaimer.)

Jeff at
Thrifty Mariner (813-390-7474 and also on the Bowmar website at
www.pompanette.com/) sells seconds of any hatches or other
Bowmar/Pompanette/Hood products at significantly reduced prices.
All of
those companies are presently divisions of Pompanette LLC.

There you have it.

--
Randy Katz
