<P>My experience with Harken is that you have to look carefully at load ratings on their blocks. The may look big but not be hefty enough for the work that we need on an Alberg. I, too have broken several blocks. I also agree that Schaeffer and Ronstan both make blocks that are heavier duty but smaller in size and price. We use 90' of 1/2" for the mainsheet and it shouldn't be any shorter or smaller.<BR><BR></P></DIV>

<DIV></DIV>I wanted to follow up on George's comment on length.
<DIV></DIV>Last year I outfitted my 2nd alberg Daybreak with a new main sheet rig. I
<DIV></DIV>purchased a 4-1 block and tackle I assembled myself from bacons. Using
<DIV></DIV>Ronstan blocks I spent approx $200 (can't remember altogether) but purchased
<DIV></DIV>only about 60 feet of line for the sheet. All in all the rig worked great
<DIV></DIV>however the boom does not go out far enough. I would suggest going with the
<DIV></DIV>100, It will make it much more comfortable on the run.
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>A note on Ronstan: Do not feel you have to purchase the overpriced quality
<DIV></DIV>of Harken It is definitely the biggest and best selling manufacturer in the
<DIV></DIV>world. However ronstan and others like scheaffer (SP?) provide arguablebly
<DIV></DIV>equivalent equipment. Some suggest that the jams on ronstan actually hold
<DIV></DIV>better and grip quicker than harken. All I can say I have owned both and
<DIV></DIV>have broken more harken blocks than I can remember. I am also tend on the
<DIV></DIV>cheap and other equipment does the same job for a few bucks less.

<DIV></DIV>>> I will stick with the setup you suggest, and 1/2" line sounds fine,
<DIV></DIV>>> but I am now wondering how long it should be? The guy at Bacon's told
<DIV></DIV>>> me I needed 100', but that sounds excessive. What do you think?
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>> Let's see... The boom is about 15 to 16 feet long. The furthest out
<DIV></DIV>> it can go is approximately 90 degrees. The lower fiddle block is
<DIV></DIV>> approximately aligned with the end of the boom. The distance
<DIV></DIV>> from there to the end of the boom when it's all the way out
<DIV></DIV>> (discounting the vertical dimension) is the hypotenuse of a
<DIV></DIV>> right triangle with two 16 foot legs, or about 22.6 feet. Four
<DIV></DIV>> times that (for a 4-part tackle) is 90.5 feet. Add 9.5 feet
<DIV></DIV>> for the vertical dimension and a tail to hang onto, and 100 feet
<DIV></DIV>> sounds just about right. There's some slop in my estimations,
<DIV></DIV>> so you can probably shave a little off. I'm not sure it's worth
<DIV></DIV>> it, though. If you get 90 feet instead of 100, will it save
<DIV></DIV>> you much?
<DIV></DIV>>
<DIV></DIV>> It's not surprising; the folks at Bacons really know their stuff.
<DIV></DIV>> When we first bought Calypso, we went in there looking for a
<DIV></DIV>> spinnaker pole. The guy at the counter knew the maximum length
<DIV></DIV>> of an Alberg 30 spinnaker pole off the top of his head. I only
<DIV></DIV>> wish their store hours were more convenient for working stiffs
<DIV></DIV>> like me.
