<P>Wooden speaders will become soft when they start to rot. Poke around with a ice pick to determine soft parts of the wood. Also, one of the biggest problems is the the holes become elongated. The tell-tale sign is excessive play in the spreaders fore and aft. Bottom line: if you're uncomfortable with them, change them. A spreader failure is usually quickly followed by a mast failure. Wooden ones should be painted white on the top to reflect the sun and varnished below. My 2 cents!<BR></P></DIV>
