Hi Joe,
Running backstays are wires that usualy attach to the mast on the aft side of
an attachment point for a fractional headstay. They usualy run down and aft to
a turning block by the toerail 3/4 of the way back from the bow, and then end
either on levers that are used to tighten and loosen them, or they are tailed
to a winch.
Every time you tack, you have to release the 'old' windward running back, and
tighten the 'new' windward running back. Though it is a very old rig setup, if
you look at modern racing boats, alot of them now have running backs. Its
worth the trouble to those guys, because it helps them with mast bend control.
If you look at photos of the old 12 meters, or at modern, expensive racing
boats around you, you will see running backs.
Hope I helped,
Lee
