Now my next question for the "inner stay-club" would be this:

I assume that the reason you would want running backstays on an A30 would
be to compensate for the bend of the mast under the forces applied while
flying a staysail from your inner say. This is the primary reason stated in
"This Old Boat."  But that reason assumes that even a small staysail would
cause the mast to bend. Is this true? 

If it is true, what about the Cape Dory that was mentioned before. I
understand it has no running backstays.

Do all sailboats that employ a cutter rig, have running backstays? 

Another thought- If your staysail is smaller than (close to) the height of
where your spreaders are, how much "bend in the mast could there be? IE:
Don't the shrouds, anchored near the spreaders, "stabalize" the mast. 

Maybe a staysail, that small, wouldn't be worth much. But what about a
staysail/storm sail?
