Yes, I have intimate knowledge of this area having spent a great deal of time
upside down in it after I took out my engine for rebedding. You can get a
better idea by lookin at the boat out of the water. The keel is about 18" -20"
high at its thickest in roughly the center of the boat and then tapers down in
a straight line to about4"-6" high where it ends about 18" before the lower
rudder pinion. This is the lowest point in the boat, directly under the engine
and to reach it, you have to hang over the rear edge of the cabin sole to your
hips (with the engine out, of course) and reach the full length of your arms.
On the older (linerless, up to # 160 something) boats, that space at the
bottom is filled with various cheap material from the rear of the iron to
inside stern of the boat and covered with a thin layer of glass which
frequntly delaminates from oil left in the bilge. I pulled out a 14" piece of
2"x 4" wood and a bunch of what looked like it might be thoroseal cement and
cleaned it out and filled it up with cut scraps of fiberglass and resin to the
top of the ballast. I think Phil Beigel did it also on "Carnival Lady".
Pray you never have to do this. It was torture.
