Chris,
    With the running backstays, you use a Highfield Lever at the deck
end of each stay . You loosen the leeward stay and then you tighten the
windward stay, so the boom does not hit the one to leeward. I have seen
these levers set up so you get a foot or more of slack in them. This, of
course, is even more trouble in tacking than just changing and trimming
the sheets. You begin to need quite a crew.
