Hi Paul,
An old fashioned wheel mounted on an old fashioned worm gear that sits in a
beautiful teak box with crowned top at the aft of the cockpit could present a
few problems.
First is interference with the mainsheet. traveler or no,that box will
interfere with the mainsheet.  If you mount the box the real old fashoioned
way, on the for edge of the aft deck,(Which will now be considered the
Quarterdeck, Capt. Hornblower), there will be interference with the aft hatch.
the worm gear usualy mounts at an angle perpendicular to the rudderpost.  the
rudderpostwill have to be extended up to join the worm gear. It might cut into
the aft cockpit bulkhead, which may have to be drilled out.
Now I know you never said anything about being married to the idea of an old
fashoined, bronze Perko worm gear. But just in case you did think about it,
here are some thoughts.:)
surely some kind of quadrant system could be devised. If you like the idea of
a beatifuly varnished teak box to house the mechanism, with a suitably crowned
opening hatch on top, then the box could hide the quadrant, all above the
cockpit sole level.  But you still are going to lose some space in the aft end
of the cockpit, though admitedly, gaining a very salty looking seat. the seat
will not be very comfortable at Alberg 30 angles of heal, I would suspect.
a space age approach, which you have alluded to, is an articulating pedestal.
I see this made up of a series of stainless steel pipes, mounted in a
parrallelogram pattern, athwartships.  The ss tube junctions would be joined
by articulating joints, ie bolts set in nylon bushings, so that the entire
pedestal could be shifted , or 'leaned'from side to side, with out changing
the tension on the steering cables. The advantage would be that the steering
wheel could be held up to windward, or leeward depending on what your
preferred position is.
I dont know if any of this is usefull, Paul. Just haveing some fun!:)
