Hi Friends,

My source for the main halyard sheave replacement was Joe Palmer at Tartan
Yachts in Ohio. He made a new sheave out of the same polymer material that is
used in commercial cranes ( I forgot what its exact name is), and he did a
nice job. Cost was about 30 bucks.

I didn't like the condition of the retaining plates, and the compression
sleeve that the sheave rolls on was frozen to the bolt, so I had all new parts
fabricated by Joe. I had the retaining plates made of aluminum that was double
the thickness of the original, so I had to grind out the mast slot to fit the
parts in.

Total cost for sheave, retaining plates, ss bolt, and compression tube, and
shipping was just over 100 bucks. I mailed him all the original parts so he
could use them as templates.

I didn't choose to go for the two smaller sheave arrangement because I didn't
trust myself to measure and drill the two new holes in the mast ( well, four
new holes if you consider both mast walls) accurately enough. If they are off,
the sheaves will be crooked, and there will be chafe.

I got a quote from Rich Krolak at Chessapeke Rigging for the same parts, and
he was going to make an aluminum sheave, and anodize all the parts. His quote
came to nearly 300 dollars.
