John ... I'll tell you briefly what worked for me. You can adjust the
first wrench to where it is a snug fit on the packing gland and force it
on with one hand then gently turn the shaft until the first wrench rests
against the side of the bilge. Be sure you turn in the direction which
will allow you to back off the lock nut with the second wrench .... it
only has to be moved a small amount to unlock the nut.  Now you need
only tighten the gland a small amount  then do a test to see if it is
still leaking ... you may have to do this several times. If your shaft
gets too hot to keep your hand on it after a bit of running in gear
...you have tightened too much.

Now for the trick that made this all work for me ..... I attached a
safety line on the handle of the first wrench so it would not fall into
the bilge if (or I should say when) it slipped of ... because that will
happen , but if you are patient you can quite successfully make this
adjustment by your self by reaching with only one hand at a time into
the work area.
