Brian;
I wouldn't worry too much about the black stuff, it's likely carbon
being burnt off after long hours of motoring but your right about the
Luddites, try not to make a big mess around them.
The other possibility and there are many is that it is oil getting in by
worn rings or more likely valve guides, but if it ain't broke ... just
keep an eye on your oil level, the old girl will likely give you years
more service.
Roller furlers, Schaffer 1100, those who have bought it rave about it
and it is pretty to boot. I know of several 30s that have installed
the unit and not one complaint, it requires #6 luff tape to be
retrofitted on the Jib, Joe Fernandez of Triton Sails 905-891-8166
Mississisauga, Ontario makes great sails and probably built yours when
he was younger - he was chief sail maker at the Taylor Loft.
Joe built me a whole new inventory for Sunstone, it seems sails wear out
after 24 years (even his) and he talked me out of Profurl and into
Schaffer and I'm glad he did as it has been trouble free, robust and
looks great and it is an employee owned company to boot.
Buy it, 'nuf said.
