Greg,
Let me refer you to Lee's e-mail of Monday Feb. 22, 3rd paragraph,
regarding the strength of the cabin sole. My boat, # 275, has had such a
hatch since before I bought it eight years ago and I see no weakening,
no cracks, etc. in the area of the sole around the hatch. It is
installed as far forward as it can reasonably go, which undoubtedly
helps, and has a strong aluminum frame sandwiched above & below the
fiberglass, and seems quite solid to me.

I am putting a piece of 3/4" marine plywood under the sole from the
hatch aft to the rudderpost, under the new pedestal, to avoid any
possible problem caused by cutting another hole in the cockpit sole for
the pedestal and an 8" dia. deckplate to give access to the rudderpost,
especially considering the leverage one gets against a 48" high
pedestal, wheel and guard assemblage.
                                                    - Gordon White A-275
