Hi Carl,
No boat that is 30 years old is not going to need some work.  What you are
describing at the chainplates, is of course very serious.  The rotten wood
must be all removed, then new wood scarfed in in a way that is both strong
enough to hold up your mast and aestheticaly pleasing.  It will be a lot of
work, in tight spaces.  If you lke everything else about the boat, and the
price is right, then you have a decision to make.Is she on the verge of
needing new sails, an engine rebuild, etc, etc.?
