Looking at photos of my old 34 ft gaff-rigged schooner, the gallows
consisted of two upright pieces of brass or bronze pipe that tapered in
toward each other slightly - look in the photos to be maybe 8" closer at
the top - which in itself adds some rigidity. The crossbar was a piece
of mahogany about 2" x 10" x four feet? With three notches in it. It sat
just in front of the main sheet.
I can't see in the photos but I think it had pieces at the base
reinforcing it fore and aft - shorter pieces of pipe/tubing angled about
12" above the deck. Must have been welded/brazed.

We never had any concern with its strength. The tubing looks in the
photos to be a bit heavier than 1" dia.

    Worked for us.
