Alan, first bet would be to check your water pump impeller.  They frequently 
shed blades.  It's best to change them every spring.  NEVER run the engine 
dry, not even turn it over.  If the impeller is ok, then remove the water 
pipes that lead from it.  When I bought my boat, it wanted to over heat.  I 
found parts of about 4 (count em) four different impellers in the pipes.  
After I cleaned them out, she ran fine.  Russ
