Hi Dan,
I've had an old pump up alcohol stove flame up on me, too. The boat was
filled with fire extinguisher powder, and was a real pain to clean up. I was
lucky that is all I had to deal with. when brand new, the pump up stoves are
safe, but as they age and corrode in the damp, salt env, they become a
hazzard.

the little prortable propane stoves are an alternative, but as George said,
they become expensive. I have had the swedish Origo stoves on my boats since
1990, and have been very happy with them. Boil a big pot of water for pasta
or hot dogs quick-the flame is very hot, but it is not pressurised. Fuel is
simple stove alcohol, and cheap. Go to west marine or such and look at them
before you buy anything. They are expensive initialy, but the SS
construction lasts for ever, and they are very safe, and cheap to run.

Hope this helps,
Lee
