Lee,

Final coats of varnish often require thinning just to allow the product to
flow more easily.  The amount of thinner is very small, so it does not have
a significant impact on the strength of the coat.  Higher quality varnishes,
which often are made with tung oil and natural resins, (like Epifanes) are
very viscous and difficult to brush if not thinned slightly.

The general practice I follow is:  first coat thinned approx. 50%; second
coat approx. 25%; third coat 15% and subsequent coats thinned only as
necessary to properly flow (usually around 5% or so, I would guess).  I put
on a minimum of 8 coats on bare wood.  Epifanes is my varnish of
choice--it's beautiful and holds up well.
