Hey Gordon,
I have read many articles by pros on varnishing, and many say to thin the 
varnish, as you explained in your post.
I can understand thinning the first coat, to help the varnish get better 
penetration into the wood, but once the wood has been sealed by that first, 
or certainly by the second coat, what advantage do you find in thinning 
subsequent coats?  I would think that thinning the later coats would just 
weaken the varnish, and reduce the amount of varnish that is being applied.
