Alan, do yourself a favor and forget about wire-rope halyards. You won't
find them on America Cup boats.
The first spring I had my boat, I removed the masthead shiv, had it groved
for 3/8 line, cleaned and lubed it. I also sanded it slightly on each side
so it ran free. It will never jump out, because there is no place for it to
go. Bring the halyard down the front side of the mast to a winch. Throw
that reel halyard thing away, or polish it for a paper weight, before it
breaks your wrist. I changed my jib halyard at the same time, with a bigger
block on the mast head. Trouble free, and can't hurt your hands with meat
hooks I've had a wire halyard break, so they aren't that good.
Step up to modern times, forget 1962.
