The bronze thing at the stern where the propeller exits the
boat may be called either a stern casting or stern flange. It is
part of the shaft assembly that begins where the shaft enters
the stuffing box. The casting supports the sleeve bearing that
surrounds the prop shaft. The sleeve bearing has at least one
proprietary name, and that is a Johnson Cutless(R)sleeve
bearing. The stern flange also supports the stern tube or shaft
log which fills with water via the grooves in the Cutless
bearing once the boat is in the water. That's why the boat
should sit in the water for a while before engaging the prop. At
the front of the stern tube is the stuffing box. On the A30 we
usually have a flexible stuffing box which should drip a bit,
and a bronze shaft tube. All of this is attached to the
deadwood by flange bolts. It does not matter that the deadwood
is fiberglass. We have an internal stern casting rather than an
external strut to support the prop shaft and cutless bearing.
