If you rig up your main for quick reefing or put your reef in before
leaving the dock the small area of sail will greatly stabilize your boat.
We sail our Alberg designed Pearson Electra in four to six foot waves on
Lake Erie regularly and I quickly found out when leaving the "cut" between
the Mentor Lagoons and the main body of Lake Erie that the chop builds up
so quickly you feel like you are on a bucking bronko going up and down and
from side to side all at once! IT was quite disconcerting the first few
times we did it. Under only outboard our prop came up out of the water
every few seconds and we felt as if we would be flung from the cockpit.
Once we tried going out with the main up and sheeted in with the engine
running we felt much more stable and in control.
