Dick,

the slides on my main, from the bottom to the 2nd reef line are not fixed
directly to the sail. They run through a line that also runs through the
sail. This allows you to take a reef without having to "unhook" the slides
up to the reef point and is therefore quicker.
When reefing, the slides stop at the bottom of the track but because the
sail is not directly attached to the slides it can keep on coming down
towards the boom. A little hard to describe.

There is a name for that line, I think it is called a jack line, not sure,
maybe someone else on the list can confirm. If you mention this to a
sailmaker they should know what I'm talking about.
