[Alberg30] prop shaft thread

 Kent,

It's true that getting the shaft free from the coupling can be a bear, but
it's nice to be able to hand the machinist a complete speciman to replicate.
The method I've used to get them apart involves seperating the coupling
halves, loosening the set screw, inserting an object (I use a hex nut on a
loop of light string or wire) between the halves (aligned with the
centerline) and re-tightening the coupling bolts.  As you tighten the
coupling halves together, the nut will push the shaft out of its coupling
half a fraction of an inch.  Then the process is repeated with successively
larger hex nuts until it's pushed free.  This has always worked, but it
takes patience.  The first thing I do is clear as much stuff out of the way,
and lay an old blanket or something on top of the engine to make it a little
more comfortable.

If your threads are shot from galvanic action, probably the rest of your
shaft is also. If you do your own work, replacing the shaft isn't too
expensive. Getting it out of the coupling for the motor will be the
hardest
part but, if your replacing it, get your hands on a sawzall and cut it
just
past the coupling. Give the coupling to the shaft supplier and let him
press
it out and fit it to the new shaft.
If you decide to rethread it instead, be sure to use a large fender
washer
to cover the aft end of the prop and be sure to pin that nut. If you
turn it
down to 1/2" thread size, the outside of the nut will only be 3/4"
across.
Not enough to secure the prop!
Again, if your right about galvanic problems to the point of nut
problems,
CHANGE THAT SHAFT!
