Hugh:
I replaced the packing in the stuffing box with the dripless
greenish Teflon clay material while the boat was out of the water. It took
two of us quite a while to remove the old packing and replace it with the
new flax and dripless material so I would be hesitant to try it with the
shaft log spurting water. The spurting water would, however, be a real
incentive to get on with the job.
By the way, I cut a small opening in my port cockpit locker so that
someone in that locker can get a "decent" grip on the stuffing box. Even
with everything removed from the locker that space is not very large. I had
a smaller friend get into the locker while I reached down through the
inspection port in the cockpit sole. I tried to get into the locker myself
and wondered if anyone would see my legs sticking up before I died from the
blood pooling in my head. I figure that it would take a fireman with a
Hurst tool (the jaws of life) to extract my 6'2" middle-aged carcass from
the locker.

Ross,

Did you install the green stuffing box material with the boat in the water?

Would it be possible to do so? I have used the dripless mechanical shaft
seals for over 7 years now on other boats besides my A30 and I have been
very happy with them. I had to have the boat out to install them and pull
the shaft part way out of the engine coupling to get them on.
