I beg to differ -- In the 15 years I've had my A-30, I've sailed it
numerous times in 30-40 MPH winds with the 2nd reef and with or without
the working jib. I goes way faster and handles much better, so it is
"more funner" I think, (less work, more speed) with the 2nd reef in. I
have heard that some A-30 mainsails don't have a very deep 2nd reef,
that would be a serious problem much over 30 MPH. Without enough reef
when it's really blowing, you have to spill a lot of wind, and can't go
very fast at all... Under the right conditions we sail for -hours- with
the rail down at surfing speed, and the boat is rock solid stable. I
would suggest adjusting the mainsail area (reef points) before adding
weight and maybe unnecessarily compromising light air performance, such
as it is...
