I can't say much about customization, but just having completed a lot of
work on my old A-4 last season, I would suggest that you first make sure
that the basic systems, particularly the cooling system are in order. If
it's open loop, as most are, it is very likely that there is crud in the
side plate and manifold that impeded the flow of cooling water. Also, no
fragments of broken impellers in the water pump or the plumbing
immediately conected to it (espec9ially in the elbows!). It's important
that there is sufficient flow at high load that the thermostat clicks on
and off. Don Moyer sells upgrades to the water pump plumbing, and
replacing the rigid crossover tube with the two barbed fittings he sells
lets you flush the engine easily by conencting a wtar hose at that
point.

while I made various repairs to my engine last year.
