The following message appeared on another sailing list I subscribe to
... I thought it was worth passing along to my Alberg friends:

Tom S
Alberg # 412

This past week in Delran NJ, two people died from CO poisoning on their
boat. While tied to the dock at 2 AM, the owner started the engine to
charge up his battery. Unfortunately for him, the hatches were closed
and the aft area of the 29 foot power boat was enclosed. He and his
lady friend never woke up. The boat owner was a Cop in my home town of
Willingboro and I knew him.

I guess that I am writing this to remind everyone that now that it is
getting colder out some folks may forget about ventilation while running
their motor or genset. With this writing possibly someone my just
remember that CO is odorless and deadly. While underway don't forget
about the station wagon effect. I recall just a few years ago a captain
found his wife dead in the galley after just one hour of running down
the intercoastal. Please be safe everyone.
