[Alberg30] Another Mast Beam Question

I am about to do the mast beam repair on #233.  The teak beam is glassed
to the deckhead with what appears to be a single piece of fibreglass
tape that comes down the beam about 2 inches.  This will interfere with
a good flat fit of the aluminum beam to the wood.  Can anyone who has
done this repair, tell me what they did about this?  I am reluctant to
just grind the tape away.  I suppose a compromise is to feather the
lower edge of the tape to achieve somewhat of a flat surface.
