[Alberg30] stern tube repair

I got my propeller off today and removed the shaft through the cutless bearing, so I can get a new stuffing box and make the repair to the stern tube hose. However, I am having some problems with getting the stern tube hose out. There is apparently a great deal more rubbery bedding compound (polysulfide?) than I had anticipated back there. I dug off the stuff that I thought was around the base of the hose, and found that the hose just keeps going deeper into the bedding. I am not really comfortable with this, but I am not exactly sure what to do. The inside of the hose is dryrotted, and it has cracks in it, so it needs to be replaced, but I can't even see the end. Then I started looking further aft and there is an awful lot of this rubbery bedding stuff back there. I mean, about 4-6" above the level of the hose. I think that the stern tube may actually be around another 2-3" aft of where the hose exits the bedding now. Can anybody share any experience they might have had wit!
h this situation in their own boats? I am hoping to get deep enough into the bedding to find some hose clamps and then I can just pull out the hose and replace it, but so far, it just keeps getting deeper. I had expected to peel off a little bit of polysulfide and then be able to remove the hose. Now I am thinking that I'm going to have to get back there with a serrated knife and cut out big chunks of it before I'll be able to remove this thing.
