[Alberg30] Forward Chainplates

I was once told that more small fastners is better than a few large ones. I
agree that the fasteners 1/4" are too small and 5/16" that are not threaded
all the way to the head are much better, but it wouldn't hurt to add a
couple too.

Replacing the bolts with 5/16" that are not threaded full length
is the major issue. You should check for damage or rot in the
bulkheads and knees, too. Also look for space between the knees
and the deck or signs that the knees are separating from the hull.

Many people recommend adding backing plates where the chainplates
are bolted. At the very least, be sure to use large washers.

I like Rule Elastomeric. It maintains a rubbery consistency.

A-30?

The word superior covers a lot of territory, but there's no question
that the masonite cores have proved less troublesome than the balsa.
Balsa is a very good light coring material PROVIDED that you bond it
well and keep it dry. The major problem is water infiltration, usually
where hardware penetrates the deck, but also to a lesser extent due to
cracks. I recommend sealing all deck holes with epoxy to protect
the balsa.

On my boat, I found an area of dry delamination that was just a bad
job in the layup. The balsa blocks were warped (probably got wet in
storage) and were only bonded to the glass along two edges. This is,
of course, not very strong and these bonds were breaking down.
