The simple criteria come down to:

Buy it

If you have very little money

If you have plenty of time (retired, fired, laid off for a LONG TIME)

If you have good boat wright skills or can transfer your carpentry skills to boatbuilding

If you are long on patience, short on cash

If it is in the next marina or nearby

If you have an inborn passionate desire to take something that was once of great value and quality, somehow fell into terrible straits and you have the innate vision, desire and drive to realize the vision of returning the once beautiful swan back from an ugly duckling

If you have masochistic tendencies

Don't Buy it

If you are of substantial means of filthy rich

If you have little or no known carpentry and boatwright skills (or have friends who possess these skills :)

If you have adequate money but are tight assed in your approach to parting with money (what a deal! An Alberg 30 for $3,000 - Why Morey paid $25,000, boy did I get a deal!)

IF you are short on time, work two jobs, are a traveling salesman or a CIA operative in Afghanistan

If you have an intolerably short fuse and patience

If it is far, far away and will require more money that cost to transport it to your sailing waters

There are many Alberg 30's out there, and a number for sale right now...

I replaced the old electricty, upgraded the galley, installed ac., am installing anew traveller, added roller furling, am installing a new head and holding tank , revived all wood inside the boat, will revive the teak outside and ultimately will repaint the deck. When I am finished it may look better than new in many ways. I also replaced all the running rigging which was quite old. I did this because I knew what I had and judged that it would be worth the investment to have this boat.

Whether they damaged the boat structurally by cutting away the bulkheads is a question I would have. I would leave question to those on this list more qualified to answer, but I sure would have questions about going ahead.
