I have hull #176 which I bought back in 1971. About 3 years after I bought
it,it nearly sank at the dock due to the stuffing box. I took the packing nut
off at that point and repacked the box with graphite impregnated cotton
packing. The nut had to be torqued down maybe a 1/4 turn this spring and after
almost 30 years I doubt I've tightened more than 1 turn on the packing nut.
I've never had an electric bilge pump in the boat and have never had a probem
I don't use the engine much but I use it to get in and out of our harbor at
Shelter Island. This is a possible alternativ e to the dripless stuffing box
as tis is virtually dripless and a lot less involved.
