I agree with  putting a padeye to attach the tack of a staysail stay at or just fwd
of the chain locker bulkhead while beefing up that attachment now the ? is do you
run the stay parallel to the forestay and add a tang to the mast there or run the
stay to just over the spreaders? I think if you keep only about 200lbs tenson on
the staysail stay you could do it anywhere without running backstays. but it would
depend on how big a sail you put up and the wind force I guess I have had not much
success running a flying jib with a wire luff and keeping adequate luff tension in
a blow, I too am a  wooden boat (gaff cutter) throwback.
