[Alberg30] BUC criteria

Greg,

The BUC book is very useful, but I think you have to read it with
large quantities of salt.  If you look at the numbers, you'll see
that there's always a strong "age" component in the price.  If
you look at the value of a boat like the Alberg 30, you'll see that
this isn't justified.  The older boats are not worth less than the
newer ones based on age.  The real criteria is condition.

I think that BUC runs some curve-fitting analysis on the data they
get.  In some cases, I think they're fitting to far too little 
data gathered over far too long a span of time.  I think there's
also a tendency to think of boats like cars, but well-built boats
don't depreciate the way cars do.  There's probably pressure, 
either conscious or unconscious, to make the "condition" adjustment
consistent with this expected "depreciation for age" factor.

My advice?  Presuming you like this boat, envision it in the 
condition you'd like it to be.  Calculate the rough cost of
putting it into that condition, using your own labor where 
possible.  Figure what the boat in that condition is worth to
you.  That gives you a ball-park figure on the current worth
of the boat to you.  Then, compare that figure with actual
selling prices of similar boats for a sanity check.
