[Alberg30] Cutless bearing?

Another A 30 'lesson'.; the 'unmolested' state of the shaft log seems to be 
buried in alot of old caulking compound where it exits the hull at its 
forward end.  The previous owner had taken all of that caulking out when he 
replaced the cutlass bearing, and did not replace the goo. The shaft log 
began to turn in its threaded joint at the cutlass bearing fitting, and leak. 
 That was before I cut the access   and put the access hatch in the cockpit 
sole.
Make sure the shaft log is threaded down tightly into that cutlass fitting, 
and get alot of good caulking material around it where it comes out of the 
hull.
How have other A 30 owners handled the caulking situation when they have 
redone this job?
