[Alberg30] Winter afloat

One winter I was very surprised to find a significant amount of water in the
boat. The source was the cowl vents on the lazarette. When ice forms on the
deck and then it melts or it rain theses vents provide a direct path to the
bilge. Now every winter I remove the vents and cap them off.

We probably get colder weather up here in Long Island than in the
Chesapeake. The normal procedure here is to cover the boat. One year I did
not do it and water got into the boat, apparently through stern vents.
Anyway, there was a significant amount of water in the bilge when I checked
it and it had frozen solid. I didn't see any way to thaw it out. Fortunately
when it finally thawed there was no damage, but I was visualizing the bilge
being pushed apart by the ice.
