I'm not sure about this one George. I think I've seen boats sink while on land. If a boat fills with rain water inside above the waterline, isn't it sunk? It just happens to be on land instead of in the water. To prevent this, remove your engine intake hose from the thru-hull fitting and leave the seacock open to prevent flooding inside the boat while on land.

It's a square flax rope impregnated with wax, or some synthetic substitute.

Here on the Chesapeake, it's not absolutely essential to pull the  
boat in the winter.  In fact, the bubbler is to protect the slip
more than the boat.  On the Great Lakes, they've already pulled
theirs.

I like to pull mine every second winter to paint the bottom and check
the underwater fittings.  If the packing needs replacing, doing it
while the boat's on the hard is a lot simpler.

A lot of people pull their boat every winter, and it's hard to
argue against that.  Very few boats sink while on jackstands.
Also, this gives the glass a chance to dry out a bit, perhaps
reducing the liklihood of blisters.
