I use a downhaul when I think it's going to be inconvenient to go
forward, such as when singlehanding or the water is rough. I just
tie a light line (1/4" or 5/16") to the top hank, thread it between
the sail and forestay every fourth hank or so to a block attached
to the stem fitting. From there I lead it back to the cockpit.

With the sheet and downhaul pulled tight, the sail will flop around
on the foredeck, but it won't go overboard.
